Tranter Serial Numbers

These suffixes seems to have been treated like the village bicycle, you can find many revolvers bearing the suffix R (Robert Adams personal suffix) made by Tranter and many Y-suffixed ones (one of Tranters suffixes) made by DA&D. These firms seems to have both competed and cooperated with each other at the same time, each having their own patent serial range with a suffix. Well you get the idea, it's all filted together like the European royal houses. Most DA&D frames was made by William Tranter, who also both exported to, and bought frames from Belgium and Birmingham makers, who in turn provided the other London fitters with parts and bought. The original plans seems to have been for Adams to manufacture the frame alone to sell them to different fitters who finished them with mechanisms of their own choice.Īnd there was inbreeding going on like Deliverance on wheels.

etc, and god knows how many Belgian makers, all made with the Adams patent type frame. Arms Co revolvers, Pryse & Redman revolvers, Calisher & Terry revolvers, LAC revolvers, Brazier revolvers,Hollis & Sons revolvers etc. We should actually be talking about Tranter revolvers, Kerr revolvers, Bros. There was a whole bunch of different makers, all paying royalties to Robert Adams (and to the banker Hinkey who had 1/8 intrest in the patent) What we today calls Adams revolvers was by no means made by Mr Adams alone. They are one piece, that's the whole point of Robert Adams original patent.
